Punjab Police official beats woman over theft, probe ordered
January 23rd, 2012 - 6:21 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Jan 23 (IANS) Taking suo motu notice of video footage showing a Punjab Police official beating up a woman accused of theft, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission Monday issued notice to police and the Mansa district administration.
Sources said the commission has asked the district administration to investigate the incident and submit a report.
A district police official said an investigation had been ordered into the incident.
The video footage showed a Punjab Police official in uniform beating up a woman who had been accused of stealing a gold chain.
The incident happened Sunday at Bareta village in Mansa district of south Punjab, 240 km from here.
