Hoshiarpur (Punjab), Feb 19 (IANS) A young man shot himself dead at point blank range after being surrounded by the police in a village in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district Thursday, the police said.
The man shot himself with a US-made 9mm pistol but his accomplice managed to escape from the spot, Hoshiarpur’s district police chief Parmod Ban said here.

Both men were not identified till Thursday afternoon though police officials believe that a major incident could have been averted since a US-made 9mm pistol and a locally-manufactured .315 bore pistol were recovered from them.

It is still not clear to the police whether the second youth, who fled, had more weapons with him.

The shooting took place near Bhunoh village, 120 km from state capital Chandigargh, Thursday morning when the Punjab police signalled two youth on a motorcycle to stop at a barricade near Mahilpur town.

“On seeing the police, the youth sped away and were chased by a police party. However, the motorcycle skidded on a ‘kuchha’ (unmetalled) road that they took near village Bhunoh,” Garhshankar Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajinder Singh told IANS.

Singh said the two men fired a few rounds at the police team chasing it.

Villagers, who overheard the duo, told the police that one man was asking the other to run away while he held the police at bay. While the second fled, the first shot himself as the police closed in.
