Chandigarh, Feb 19 (IANS) Lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday began an indefinite boycott of the court of Justice Uma Nath Singh after he issued a contempt notice to lawyers, including the bar association president and secretary.
The stand-off between the bar association and the judge was building up in the last few days after the judge passed some remarks against lawyer N.K. Tiwari in the court.

Tiwari complained about it to the bar association, which took up the issue with Chief Justice T.S. Thakur.

The judge Thursday issued a contempt notice to the lawyers, leading to their boycott of his court.

“This is nothing new. Last year also lawyers boycotted his court for one month. Now we will not go to that court till the judge is transferred from here,” Bar Association president Rupinder S. Khosla told IANS.

He said the judge was passing unwarranted remarks against the lawyers.

The Bar Council of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh also called for a strike Feb 24 to protest the judge’s behaviour.
