Punjab allows private architects to clear building plans

Chandigarh, June 12 (IANS) Private architects in Punjab will now be able to approve and sanction building plans for residential structures, a minister announced here Sunday.

Local Government and Industries Minister Tikshan Sud said that anybody constructing a building on a residential plot measuring up to 500 square yards could get his plans approved from authorised architects of Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA), Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) or the concerned urban authority.

He said that private architects will now be authorised to approve and sanction building plans according to PUDA Building Rules.

Sud said that “by making building plan approval decentralised, the state government has taken a major governance reform step to help the common man who was to go from pillar to post to get his building plan approved. Fearing harassment, people tended to construct buildings without getting the plan approved.”

He said that this decision will save the time and money of the common man and reduce the burden on government departments.

Sud said that any architect registered with the Indian Council of Architects and having 10 years of experience could apply for the authorisation. The authorised architect can then approve building plans for residential plots measuring up to 500 square yards.

He said that instructions have been issued to the all municipal corporations and urban development authorities to adhere to the new law and implement it.
