Pune gears up for two-day international robotic competition

August 29th, 2008 - 4:48 pm ICT by IANS -

Mumbai/Pune, Aug 29 (IANS) Pune gears up to see robots co-ordinate as a team as they form a pyramid to enact a high-tech ‘dahi handi’ (taking butter from a pot hanging high above) sequence at the two-day 7th ABU International Robocon Competition Saturday. The event is the culmination of a yearlong competition among teams from over two dozen colleges spread across 17 countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

Nirma Institute of Technology, Ahmedabad and Maharashtra Institute of Technology, (MIT) Pune are representing India at the event.

An MIT official said that the unique theme of ‘Govinda’ (name of Hindu god Krishna) has been selected since it symbolizes a high degree of team work.

The robots have been built by students from the mechanical, electronics and computer engineering streams of their respective colleges.

The teams will field robots, each around 4 feet tall, that will lift their hi-tech counterparts in an attempt to reach the pot of butter hanging above.

The first team that succeeds in retrieving three cubes of butter from the pot will be declared winner, the official explained.

Over 500 foreign delegates, including students and academicians from the Asia-Pacific countries, have reached Pune to witness the competition.

The competition first started in 2002 in Tokyo and has been instrumental in nurturing and and promoting innovations among engineers.

Sponsored by Prasar Bharati, the event shall be telecast live on Doordarshan Sports on Saturday and Sunday, according to an official spokesperson in Pune.
