Pt. Shivkumar Sharma to perform in Aurangabad, Maharashtra

- Aurangabad, October 24/ (Janak Joshi) –Master instrumentalist of the santoor Pandit Shivkumar Sharma will perform in Aurangabad on Sunday in the two days Sharadanjali Sangeet Mahotsava organized by the Naad foundation and the Government of India’s South Central cultural center, Nagpur during 24 and 25 October.
The program is organized to pay tribute on the second death anniversary to the noted singer Pandit Balasaheb Bahirgaonkar in Sant Eknath Rangmandir of Aurangabad, said program officer Aartee Patankar.
The second day’s events include Pakhawaj instrument performance by Sukhad Munde. Internationally acclaimed Santoorist Pt. Shivkumar Sharma will perform to conclude the two days music gathering. The Aurangabad chapter of Naad will felicitate pandit Sharma in the meantime.
Naad is working to promote the classical music through its various chapters across the nation. The two days music event is free of cost and aimed to attract more and more people to the classical music. In the first year flute maestro Hariprasad Chauresia and Sabri Brothers performed in Aurangabad.
About pandit Shivkumar Sharma
Shivkumar Sharma is the master instrumentalist of the santoor, after some years as a vocalist. He is credited with single-handedly making the santoor a popular classical instrument. He recorded his first solo album in 1960. Sharma composed the music of V. Shantaram’s Jahank hanak payal Baje (1965). In 1967, he teamed up with flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra to produce a concept album , call of the valley (1967) which turned out to be one of the greatest hits in Indian classical music.
He has composed music for many Hindi films in collaboration with Pandit Chaurasia starting with silsila (1980) with the name as Shiv -Hari music duo. Some of the movies they composed music are Faasle (1985), Chandani (1989), Lamhe (1991) and Daar (1993).
Sharma is the recipient of national and international awards, including an honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA, in 1985, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, the padam Shree in 1991, and the Padama Vibhushan in 2001.
