Protesting teachers baton charged in Lucknow
November 24th, 2009 - 9:30 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Nov 24 (IANS) Police said that they had to resort to baton charge here Monday to disperse hundreds of teachers and non-teaching staff from schools across Uttar Pradesh after their demonstration in demand of regularization of service and hike in salaries turned unruly. They were also protesting at a prohibited site, officials said.
Under the banner of Uttar Pradesh Karamchari-Shikshak Mahasangh (UPKSM) a large number of teachers and non-teaching staff from schools across the state carried out an agitation near the Vidhan Sabha, where the state government Monday prohibited demonstrations citing security reasons.
“We have detained as many as 40 teachers and non-teaching staff, who resorted to vandalism and carried out protests at the site where holding demonstrations is prohibited in view of terror threat,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Piyush Srivastava told reporters.
“As the teachers and other employees turned unruly and tried to target vehicles on the road and public property, we resorted to force in order to disperse them,” he added.
Even as the police claimed no one was seriously injured in the incident, UPKSM said 10 of its members were injured and were taken to hospital.
“We were silently observing our protest, but some police personnel attacked us with batons. They (police personnel) were just not willing to listen to us,” said A.P. Singh, an office bearer of UPKSM.
