Protesters picket Manmohan Singh’s Chandigarh house (Lead)
August 23rd, 2011 - 9:32 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Aug 23 (IANS) Pro-Anna Hazare agitators held a protest outside Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s private house in the upscale Sector 11 here Tuesday. The house, let out on rent, is located less than 100 metres from the police station.
The protesters defied prohibitory orders enforced Monday by the additional district magistrate outside the house.
A group of 25-30 people, including women, carried the national flag and posters and banners, and staged a sit-in outside the house.
Police reinforcements were rushed to the area. At one time, the police personnel and the media persons outnumbered the protesters.
Manmohan Singh lived on the Panjab University campus here in 1950s and 1960s where he was first a student and later a faculty member in the department of economics. He became professor in the department at the age of 32.
The authorities Monday prohibited any assembly of five or more people in an area of 200 metres from the houses of the prime minister, union ministers Kapil Sibal, Pawan Kumar Bansal and Ambika Soni, and Congress MP Manish Tewari.
All of them have their private residences in the city.
Another group of protesters Tuesday blockaded a road in Sector 28 near the residence of union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Bansal, who is also the Chandigarh MP.
Pro-Hazare demonstrations were held in different parts of Chandigarh and also various cities and towns of neighbouring Punjab and Haryana Tuesday.
