Protest over damage caused to Ambedkar statue
April 14th, 2011 - 11:27 pm ICT by IANSGandhinagar, April 14 (IANS) A statue of Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar was found damaged on his birth anniversary Thursday in Rajkot city leading to a violent protest and an arson attack on a house, police said.
Police lobbed tear gas shells and resorted to a cane charge to control the situation in Morbi Road area where people took to streets to protest against the incident.
A mob threw stones at the police who reached the spot where the statue was damaged. A house was also set on fire. However, no casualty was reported.
Rajkot Police Commissioner Geeta Johri blamed anti-social elements who wanted to disturb peace in the city for the incident.
