Protecting tuskers important for Sri Lanka: Minister
May 25th, 2011 - 9:54 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 25 (IANS) Sri Lanka will strengthen its policies to save elephants, according to the island country’s Minister of Environment Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.
“The elephant is of special importance to both Buddhists and Hindus in Sri Lanka. The government has set aside 14 percent of the country as protected areas for conservation of wildlife,” Yapa said here.
The visiting minister took part in an international conference on elephants. He said Sri Lanka had a “sizeable population of 6,000 elephants”.
“The government is mindful of the need to ensure the long term survival of the elephant.”
The meet on elephant also drew participants from Botswana, Congo, Kenya, Indonesia, Tanzania and Thailand besides India.
