‘Property, love, depression behind shooting spree’

New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) A day after the shooting spree that left four dead in the national capital Friday, Delhi Police are exploring a possible property dispute or anguish over a love interest as possible motives for the crime. Officers have also claimed that one of the assailants may have been suffering from depression.

In the Friday shooting spree, two men, Rajbir (30) and Manish (22) shot dead three people, including the 12-year-old daughter of one of the assailants. The shootings occurred at West Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar. One of the assailants, who turned the gun on himself, also died.

Three others, including the second gunman, were injured.

Police said Rajbir and Manish had been friends.

Clarifying the the sequence of events, Deputy Commissioner of Police P. Karunakaran said the duo first went to the residence of Krishan, brother of Rajbir. Krishan was shot by his brother and is now recuperating in hospital.

The accused then headed to the house of a woman called Jyoti Saini, reportedly the girlfriend of Manish. The assailants shot Jyoti dead.

After that, the two encountered Usha Yadav (25) a teacher residing in the neighbourhood, who was returning from school. It is reported that Usha had turned down Rajbir’s overtures for a romantic relationship. Usha was shot dead.

Finally, the two reached Rajbir’s house and fired at his wife Pooja (32) and the couple’s two daughters, Khushi (12) and Rashi (two-and-a-half years old). While Khusi was killed in the firing, Pooja and Rashi were injured.

The assailants turned the gun on themselves. While Rajbir died, Manish battles for life at Lok Nayak Hospital.

This sequence was narrated by the deputy commissioner of police.

“It is yet to be ascertained whether Manish was injured in Rajbir’s firing or was also trying to kill himself,” Karunakaran said.

The deputy commissioner of police told IANS that Rajbir shot his brother because the two had a property dispute. Rajbir was reportedly also depressed, and this may have caused him to attempt to kill his family.

“Neighbours said Rajbir had a “one-sided affair” with Usha, who had reportedly spurned Rajbir and reported the matter to her family. That may be the reason she was killed,” the officer said.

Manish’s affair with Jyoti, who was killed, had reportedly been going on for about a year and a half.

“Jyoti’s family members fixed her marriage to someone else, and that enraged him, and he killed her,” said the officer.

Karunakaran said information is being collected from the family and neighbours of the victims.

Rajbir’s wife is not able to make a statement to the police yet, said the officer.

The police are still to ascertain how the two managed to get the weapons.

According to Karunakaran, three fire arms and seven live cartridges were recovered from the spot, while around 20 rounds were fired.
