Producing nuclear bomb will be strategic blunder: Iran

Belgrade, June 20 (IANS) Iran has said it does not want to produce a nuclear bomb because the step would be a “strategic blunder”, but will continue with uranium enrichment, IRNA, the country’s official news agency, reported Friday. “Iran does not wish production of nuclear arms because the practice, while being in contradiction with religious beliefs, would be a strategic blunder,” Tehran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ali-Asghar Soltanieh Thursday told reporters here.

Soltanieh said his country, while cooperating with the IAEA, would continue with enrichment activities for peaceful purposes.

“While fully cooperating with the IAEA, Iran will continue with nuclear enrichment for peaceful purposes because it completely concords with the IAEA safeguards,” the envoy said, adding that the UN nuclear watchdog has not spoken of diversion of Iran’s nuclear programme to military purposes.

He said that Iran has always been insisting ban on proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and of the chemical, biological and nuclear weapons as it had itself been a victim of chemical weapons.

According to an estimate by Tehran, more than 100,000 of its people were affected by chemical weapons used by Iraq during its war with Iran in the 1980s.
