Probe team visits dead West Bengal cop’s officeFebruary 17th, 2009 - 8:58 pm ICT by IANS
Kolkata, Feb 17 (IANS) West Bengal’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), probing the death of a police official who initially investigated the sensational Rizwanur case, visited his office Tuesday for clues to his mysterious death, an official said here.
The body of Arindam Manna, posted with the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Dum Dum, was found Feb 11 near the Mankundu railway station under the jurisdiction of Sheoraphuli GRP. It bore injury marks on legs, hands and eyes.
“A team of CID officials visited the Dum Dum GRP Tuesday afternoon to find clues to Manna’s death. In the process, they interrogated his colleagues and checked the documents and other articles inside his office locker,” said state Additional Director General of CID Bhupinder Singh.
“Also, we interrogated three of Manna’s colleagues at Dum Dum GRP separately at the CID headquarters Bhavani Bhawan in south Kolkata Tuesday.”
The CID got the first post-mortem examination report of Manna’s body Monday evening and are awaiting the second autopsy report.
“We have got the first autopsy report and expect to get the second one in two more days,” the CID officer said.
However, Singh refused to give any details on the findings.
“We can’t tell the media anything about the developments for the sake of investigation,” said Singh.
Meanwhile, Manab Chakraborty, inspector-in charge at Dum Dum GRP who was Manna’s senior, has been transferred to Sealdah GRP Monday.
“Chakraborty has been transferred Monday. But it has nothing to do with the Manna case. It’s a routine transfer,” Additional Director General (ADG) Rail Dilip Mitra said.
Rizwanur Rehman, a 30-year-old graphic designer working with a multimedia firm, was found dead Sep 21, 2007, near the railway tracks at Patipukur suburb here, barely a month after his marriage with Priyanka, daughter of Kolkata industrialist Ashok Todi who was firmly opposed to the match.
As a Hindu-Muslim love story gone wrong, Rizwanur’s death shocked the entire nation.
Todi, his brother Pradeep, brother-in-law Anil Saraogi and four city police officers were accused of threatening and pressurising Rizwanur to annul his marriage with Priyanka and stay away from her. They all were arrested but are now out on bail.
