Rajkot (Gujarat), March 24 (IANS) An inquiry has been ordered into the death of a 45-year-old man in police custody in Surendranagar district last weekend. Inspector General of Police (Rajkot range) V.V. Rabari Sunday night ordered a deputy superintendent of police to conduct the probe after leaders of the Valmiki community alleged that Dhanjibhai Ramjibhai Patadia died in Jorawarnagar police station due to severe police beating.
Surendranagar police sources said Patadia, a daily wage-earner at the Surendranagar Municipal Bureau, was arrested from his house at Ratanpar hamlet in Jorawarnagar Friday along with his son Vijay, 18, on a complaint of harassment filed by the victim’s sister Vina Rameshbhai.
Patadia’s family members said the police mercilessly beat him and his son in public view at Valmikwas Chowk as they were being taken out of their home.
“Later in the day the father and son were kept in separate lock-ups and were again beaten up severely,” alleged a community leader.
Saturday morning, an unconscious Patadia was brought to the civil hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Valmiki community members held angry demonstration in Rajkot and Surendranagar that day and submitted a memorandum to the Rajkot district collector.
