Probe launched over fish deaths in China
September 5th, 2011 - 5:57 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Sep 5 (IANS) A probe was launched in eastern China to determine the cause of a large number of fish deaths in a major river early this month, Xinhua reported Monday.
The inquiry is led by the department of oceans and fisheries in Fujian province. Hundreds of fishermen were affected by the incident in Gutian county, a government spokesman said.
The dead fish, all artificially bred, were first found floating in a section of the Minjiang river last Thursday (Sep 1).
Some 700 families running fish farms in Gutian have incurred economic losses of nearly 100 million yuan (about $15 million).
The 500-km Minjiang river is the largest river in the province.
