Pro-Maoist group’s shutdown call has partial response
February 3rd, 2010 - 12:24 am ICT by IANSKolkata, Feb 2 (IANS) The indefinite shutdown called by the Maoist-backed People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) in three West Bengal districts received mixed response on the first day Tuesday.
“Life has been hit in some particular pockets in Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore districts,” state Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha told IANS.
According to police, the shutdown impacted life in four blocks of Purulia district - Bandwan, Balarampur, Bagmundi and Barabazar. The shutdown also received a good response at Sarenga, Ranibandh and Barikul region in Bankura district.
“Life at Jhargram and its adjoining areas in West Midnapore district, which is a PCAPA stronghold area, was badly hit due to the strike.
“Vehicles kept off the road, and markets and most of the shops were also seen closed,” a district police officer said.
PCAPA, the tribal body agitating against police excesses, has been spearheading a protest and demanding withdrawal of joint forces from the region.
Two women Maoists died and eleven people - eight policemen and three ultras - were injured in a gun battle that broke out after the rebels attacked the Barikul police station in Bankura district Monday evening.
“Altogether eight people have been arrested in connection with the attack. They were produced in a district court today (Tuesday),” Purakayastha said.
