Pro-Maoist activist, CPI-M worker killed in West Bengal (Lead)
June 29th, 2010 - 1:06 am ICT by IANSKolkata, June 28 (IANS) A pro-Maoist militant wing’s activist and a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) worker were found murdered in West Bengal Monday, with the police blaming the left-wing guerillas for the killings.
The body of Kiriti Duley, 40, was found in the Sarenga area of Bankura district Monday morning.
“Duley was a member of Sidhu Kanu Gana Militia, the militant wing of the tribal body People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA). Maoists are the suspects,” Bankura police superintendent Vishal Garg said.
Asked why the rebels would kill a member of the militia, he replied: “I can’t tell you that right now. But the Maoists are the suspects as per our preliminary findings.”
Duley was a former activist of the CPI-M. He switched to the PCAPA after the tribal body became active.
Sources in Sarenga, however, said the People’s Resistance Committee could have been involved in the murder to “teach him a lesson”.
The body of a CPI-M activist Santosh Giri was recocered from a village under Lalgarh police station of west Midnapore district, police said. Giri, 46, was a resident of Amulia village.
“Maoists are the prime suspects,” said a senior police officer. Maoists are active in three western districts - West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia - of the state.
