Taipei, May 20 (DPA) Ma Ying-jeou from the pro-China opposition KMT party was sworn in as Taiwan’s new president Tuesday for a four-year term, replacing out-going president Chen Shui-bian. The swearing-in was held at the presidential office building in Taipei, to be followed by a larger ceremony at the Taipei Arena when Ma reads his inauguration speech, attended by nearly 600 foreign dignitaries and tens of thousands of Taiwan residents.

Ma, 57, won the March 22 presidential election on the platform of seeking peace and economic integration with China to revive Taiwan’s worsening economy.
