March 2nd, 2011 - 4:54 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, March 2 (IANS) Two prisoners convicted for murder in West Bengal’s Howrah district tried to escape from the court premises after throwing chilli powder in the eyes of the escorting constable. While one of them was caught, the other escaped, police said Wednesday.
Santosh Sharma and Birbal Mahato Tuesday threw chilli powder in constable Suresh Chandra Dutta’s face and ran, wearing their handcuffs. While Mahato escaped through the unfenced area of the court, Sharma, who ran towards the main gate, landed in front of the security guard, who caught him,” Howrah Police Superintendent H.K. Kusumakar said.
Both were serving terms in Presidency Correctional Home here for murdering a business man in 2005. They were presented before Howrah’s second judicial magistrate’s court Tuesday for a hearing in other pending cases against them, police said.
The constable was escorting them back to the court’s lock-up when they tried to escape.
