Kolkata, May 2 (IANS) A printing press in Tangra area of eastern Kolkata burnt down Friday. The workers said the loss would run into many thousands of rupees. A fire brigade official said: “The fire broke out around 10 a.m. The workers managed to escape unhurt. Although ten fire tenders rushed to the spot, the entire press got burnt down due to the presence of combustible chemicals.”

The fire fighters tamed the fire but were unable to completely put it out for over one hour. Efforts to douse the flames are continuing.

“This area of the city is so congested that we still cannot go near the core of the fire. We are trying to arrest the fire by soaking the adjacent slums and warehouses with water,” the fire official said.

Ratan Ali, an employee of the press, said: “Now that the entire press has burnt down losses incurred will be over Rs.80,000.”
