New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) Pratibha Patil will visit Brazil later this year, her first overseas trip after becoming the first woman president of India nearly eight months ago. Patil is likely to go on her first overseas presidential trip in April, official sources told IANS Tuesday.
Brazilian President Lula da Silva expressed happiness that the first woman president of India had chosen Brazil for her first visit abroad, the external affairs ministry said here Tuesday.
The Brazilian president conveyed this to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee when the latter called on him Monday in Brasilia during his three-day official visit to that country.
The president’s decision to choose Brazil as her first overseas visit “reflected the desire of the two countries to continue their dialogue at the highest political level with the objective of consolidating and diversifying their strategic partnership,” Lula told Mukherjee.
New Delhi will host the third summit of IBSA regional grouping that comprises India, Brazil and South Africa - the three economic powerhouses of Asia, South America and Africa - later this year.
After wrapping up his Brazil visit, Mukherjee left for South Africa Tuesday.
