New Delhi, Sep 3 (IANS) President Pratibha Patil assured a pro-Christian party delegation from Kerala that she would discuss the issue of atrocities against minority Christians in Orissa with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said K.M. Mani, leader of the Kerala Congress party, after meeting the president here Wednesday. The delegation met the president to request her to immediately intervene and rein in communal violence in Orissa that has left at least 16 people dead.

Mani said the president told a five-member delegation of Kerala Congress (M) party that the situation in Orissa was grave.

Most of the riot-affected Christian missionaries in Orissa are from Kerala.

The delegation asked the president to invoke Article 356 of the constitution in Orissa because there was a breakdown of the law and order situation, said Mani, who is also a legislator in Kerala Assembly.

Expressing anguish over the developments in Orissa, major political parties including Communists and Congress in Kerala have sent party delegations to Orissa.

Communal violence erupted in Orissa after Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and four others were killed by unidentified gunmen at his ashram in Kandhamal district Aug 23.
