Prajnesh bows out of ITF futures semisSeptember 12th, 2008 - 8:50 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS) Four days of back-to-back matches took a toll on Prajnesh Gunneswaran as he tamely surrendered to Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals of the $15,000 ITF futures at the R.K. Khanna stadium here Friday. Prajnesh, 18, began tentatively and got broken by Aqeel in the second game. The left-hander had ample opportunities to break back, as many as five breakpoints including three in the final ninth game, but he squandered all of them to lose the first set.
Any chance of a possible fight back in the second out fizzled out when Prajnesh needed medical attention for a stomach cramp.
Aqeel quickly ran to a 4-0 lead against an exhausted Prajnesh, breaking him in the first and third game to take the match in little over an hour.
Prajnesh admitted feeling unwell during the match. ” My stomach was hurting by the end of the first set. I had my chances but I wasn’t feeling physically good,” said Prajnesh who flies to Spain Sunday night. With his loss, the Indian challenge in the singles also came to an end.
Seventh seeded Aqeel now meets top seed German Peter Gojowczyk for a title clash Saturday. Gojowczyk gave a 6-2, 6-1 hammering to Hsin Han Lee of Chinese Taipei to cruise his way to the finals.
In doubles, top seed pair of Ashutosh Singh and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya thrashed Vishnu Vardhan and Divij Sharan 6-2, 6-2 to lay claim on the trophy.
