Bhopal, Feb 4 (IANS) A poverty struck scrap dealer allegedly poisoned his four daughters - two teenagers and two young kids - and his wife before he attempted a suicide here Wednesday, the police said. Amina, 19, and Aaina, 8, died but their father Shafiq Mohammad, 45, mother Sanjida, 40, and two sisters Rubina, 14, and Arshi, 3, are struggling for life in a hospital, according to the police.

“The incident came to light in the afternoon when the police received an anonymous call informing about the death of two children and other family members lying unconscious,” Bhopal Police Superintendent Jaideep Prasad told IANS.

The police found that two daughters “were lying dead”, while two more and the father and the mother “were lying unconscious” in the house of the scrap dealer “who was also found lying nearby”, Prasad said.

“A suicide note found from the spot revealed that Mohammad took the extreme step because of poverty. It appears that he first gave poison to all his four children and wife and then attempted suicide,” Prasad added.

“We are probing the matter. A few other letters have also been found,” city superintendant of police Amit Singh said.

However, Congress legislator from the old city area Arif Aqueel said there appears to be something fishy. “How can Shafiq (Mohammad) leave a suicide note when he was not able to read or write. The case needs to be investigated.”
