Moscow, Aug 21 (RIA Novosti) Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s popularity in his country has taken a leap following his response to the South Ossetian conflict, a survey has said. Georgia’s ground and air offensive to seize control of South Ossetia prompted Russia to send several hundred tanks and thousands of troops into the region, and later into parts of Georgia.
Valery Fyodorov, the head of the All-Russia Centre for the Study of Public Opinion on Social and Economic Issues (VTsIOM), which conducted the survey, said: “August’s events, and in the first place the war, have increased the (popularity) rating of the president.”
According to the survey, 76 percent of those polled have expressed their trust in the president as against 65 percent in July, he said.
The poll was based on interviews of a nationwide sample of 1,600 adults during Aug 16-17.
