Melbourne, Feb 4 (IANS) Australian captain Ricky Ponting and vice captain Michael Clarke were joint winners of the Allan Border medal for 2008-09.Clarke was also judge the Test Player of the Year while Nathan Bracken was named One-day International Player of the Year.
Ponting and Clarke both received 41 votes for the main award, followed by Michael Hussey (38), Johnson (30) and Simon Katich (30).
It is the first time there has been a tie in the Border Medal which is decided by player, media and umpire votes from the 12 Tests and 17 one-dayers played in the year.
“This an amazing shock to me. I’ve been sitting back at my table waiting for Pup (Clarke) or Mitch (Johnson) to get up and receive the awards,” Ponting was quoted as saying in The Australian.
“It’s been an up and down year for the team and everybody right at the moment is writing us off. And I know deep down in my heart that we are not very far away. I think our results would prove that over the last couple of months.”
Up-and-coming NSW opener Phillip Hughes was named the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year.
South Australian opener Michael Klinger won State Player of the Year award.
