Chennai, April 23 (IANS) The Election Commission Saturday warned of strict action against Tamil Nadu’s political parties and government servants found canvassing for postal votes.

In a statement issued here, state Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said the campaigning period for the assembly elections in the state ended April 11 and canvassing by political parties or the candidates is violation of model code of conduct.

Inducing voters by political parties or by candidates can attract penal action, he said.

The warning comes in the wake of political parties canvassing voters who have opted for postal ballot.

Votes could be mailed until a day before the May 13 counting.

Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu were held April 13 and the state witnessed around 78 percent polling.

With the results expected to be close, both the ruling DMK-led front and the opposition AIADMK-led alliance are now targeting postal voters, who could swing the final outcome.
