Poll panel ignores Musharraf’s application for party

Islamabad, June 16 (IANS) An application submitted by former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf to register his new political party was not the subject of discussion in an election commission meeting, a media report said.
Musharraf’s application for registration of the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) - that has been pending for more than a year - was not on the agenda of the commission’s meeting Wednesday because of two objections, sources told Dawn News.
The first objection was raised by a man who claims that his party with the same name was registered with the election commission in 2006.
The second objection was from the Pakistan Freedom Party which said the symbol of “eagle” sought by the APML has already been allotted to it.
The APML was formed in Pakistan last year. Mushrraf, currently in self-imposed exile in Britain, said he would return to Pakistan for the elections scheduled in 2013.
The election commission, however, registered 14 new parties Wednesday.
