Policeman, officials scuffle at Bengal assembly complex
March 24th, 2011 - 6:32 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, March 24 (IANS) A scuffle broke out between a policeman and government officials at the West Bengal assembly complex Thursday over a trivial issue, police said.
The situation became tense after government officials posted at the assembly house - Bidhan Sabha Bhavan - protested the policeman’s “misbehaviour”.
They surrounded the policeman and allegedly assaulted him, triggering a pandemonium in the house where the proceedings of the ongoing budget session started at 11 a.m., a police officer said.
“A huge police contingent and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control,” said the officer.
According to assembly sources, the policeman went to the records room around 10.30 a.m. to fetch drinking water when an official there prevented him from entering the room, resulting in an altercation.
Later, other officials posted at the house gathered and started chasing the policeman. A few of them also threw lathis and other things at him. He fled to the main building through the entrance used by the speaker and the chief minister.
Following the incident, there were some disturbances in the assembly.
“There was an altercation when a policeman on duty went to get some drinking water from an office in the assembly premises,” said Jawed Shamim, the city police’s joint commissioner.
