Policeman, militant killed in Kashmir (Lead)
March 19th, 2011 - 5:01 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, March 19 (IANS) A head constable and a guerrilla were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, police said.
The policeman was identified as Gulab Singh of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The slain separatist belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit.
The battle erupted in Shopian in south Kashmir when the SOG and Rashtriya Rifles ringed a house in Kellar village Friday evening, a police officer told IANS.
When the militants were asked to surrender, they opened fire, triggering a gunfight that left the two dead early Saturday. The dead militant was Rashid Awan, police said.
Awan joined the Hizbul a few months back and was active in south Kashmir.
