Kolkata, March 4 (IANS) A police constable has been abducted by members of a pr-Maoist group in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district, police said Friday.

“Constable Sarkar Hembram was abducted by a group of armed people. We are suspecting members of the (pro-Maoist tribal body) Peoples’ Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) of being involved in the crime,” said Jhargram Superintendent of Police Praveen Tripathi.

“We got some clues regarding the involvement of the PCAPA members. Investigation has been initiated and search operations have been launched to trace out Hembram,” he added.

Hembram, 28, was posted at Jhalda police station in Purulia district and came to his native place in Beliabera near Jhargram for his weeding. He was married to Sumita Tudu of adjacent Moul village Feb 24.

Hembram went to his in-laws’ house Thursday afternoon and in the evening, six youths on motorbikes came and asked Sumita’s father Khelaram Tudu and Hembram to go with them, said a police officer of Beliabera police station.

Hours later, they left Tudu near a forest but took Hembram with them. The family waited till Friday morning and then lodged a complaint with Beliabera police station when Sarkar did not turn up, said the officer.

Meanwhile, two suspected Maoists were arrested from Banisole village near Lalgarh. The duo was identified as Meghnath Mahato and Madhusudan Mahato, both were wanted in several cases.

“Meghnath is the brother of Maoist squad leader Badal. We are now interrogating them to know whereabouts of Badal,” said a police officer.
