Gopal, 25, and Ganpat, 24, from a Rajasthan nomadic tribe were arrested Sunday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (south Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal said the men burgled the Lodhi Colony house of C.K. Chaturvedi last month.
They are accused in many other burglary cases and their arrest has led to uncovering of a gang of thieves from a nomadic community, some members of whom have set up bases in Delhi.
Chaturvedi reported July 2 that the front door lock of his house had been broken and jewellery and his medals were missing.
After a week, V.V. Joshi, a resident of the same locality, also reported burglary of from his home.
Nidhi Gupta of the same locality July 16 reported that the front door of her house had been broken and the house ransacked.
The interrogation of arrested burglars revealed “a new trend of crime”, Dhaliwal said.
He said members of a Rajasthan nomadic tribe have come to Delhi and are putting up under flyovers, at bus stops, on pavements and other similar locations and keep an “eye on the movements of residents in nearby colonies”.
Dhaliwal said the gang works in three groups. “A set of informers who work as rickshaw-pullers and do small household jobs; criminals who come to commit the crime on the basis of specific information, and third are those who dispose of the stolen articles by selling these in Rajasthan at Sarna, Kota.”
Dhaliwal said after every heist, they would celebrate by cooking meat and consume drinks jointly at their temporary accommodation.
The gang has committed crime in every nook and corner of the city. The arrested men disclosed the gang has committed thefts and burglaries in Anand Vihar, Preet Vihar, Mayur Vihar, South Extension and Kotla Mubarakpur and Amar Colony, the police said.
