Police told to give Mumbai woman her ‘dowry’ money
February 16th, 2011 - 12:18 am ICT by IANSMumbai, Feb 15 (IANS) In a dowry harassment case, a Mumbai sessions court has ordered the city police to give to a woman Rs.6 lakh seized from her estranged husband, the woman’s lawyer said Tuesday.Additional Sessions Judge W.K. Kanbarkar said: “The seized and the deposited amount of Rs.6 lakh in the Central Bank of India shall be returned to the applicant (Sangeeta Rajesh Dharap) on furnishing bank guarantee of any nationalised bank of Rs.6 lakh.”
The court ordered the transfer of the money to Sangeeta Feb 7. The order was made available Tuesday.
“Sangeeta complained to Dadar police in October 2009 about alleged harassment by her husband Rajesh and her in-laws for dowry,” the woman’s lawyer Mahesh Vaswani said.
She alleged that her husband and in-laws tried to push her down from the fourth floor house in Dadar. She also alleged that they were not returning the “streedhan” (gold ornaments and dowry money) brought by her to her matrimonial house at the time of her marriage.
“Apart from her husband Rajesh and her in-laws, Sangeeta had also filed a petition against police officers of Dadar police station for not conducting proper investigations on an attempt to murder her,” Vaswani said.
According to him, police seized Rs.6 lakh from Rajesh as value of her dowry items and deposited it in Central Bank of India.
“The court last has ordered police to transfer that amount in Sangeeta’s account,” he said.
