New Delhi, Aug 14 (IANS) A case has been registered against four senior students of the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here after they were caught ragging their juniors in a hostel, police said Friday. However, no arrests have been made yet.
“We have registered a case against four students under sections 341 (wrongfully restraining any person) and 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person) of the Indian Penal Code late Thursday,” a senior police official told IANS.

“We are investigating the matter, but have not arrested any of them yet,” the official added.

Both the IPC sections, under which the case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station, are bailable and could attract a maximum imprisonment of one year.

The ragging incident came to light when the varsity’s anti-ragging committee received a tip-off Wednesday that students of Master of Computer Application (MCA) in the Sabarmati and Tapti hostels were ragging their juniors in one of the hostel rooms. This is first case of ragging reported from the university so far.

The committee submitted its report to the chief proctor’s office Thursday, following which hostel facilities were withdrawn from the accused students.

JNU’s acting Chief Proctor Neera Kongari said they were still examining the anti-ragging committee’s report and had registered a case, as per the Supreme Court guidelines.
