Police post torched during protest
November 2nd, 2011 - 10:16 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Nov 2 (IANS) Furious after a bus ran over a school girl Wednesday, hundreds fought pitched battles with police and torched a police post in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district, officials said.
Antiva Pal, 18, a student of Narsingh Inter College, was crushed to death by a speeding private bus in Sehbarpur town, some 300 km from Lucknow.
Demanding that the police hand over the killer driver to them, a large number of locals indulged in heavy brickbatting, damaging private vehicles and setting the Manjahri police outpost on fire.
Police fired in the air and used batons to disperse them.
“The situation is tense. Ten people have been detained for arson and vandalism,” police inspector Chandra Shekhar Singh told IANS.
