Police kill nine suspected Maoists in Jharkhand (Lead)
January 28th, 2011 - 2:20 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Jan 28 (IANS) At least nine Maoists were killed in a gun battle with the police in Jharkhand’s Latehar district early Friday, police said. Their bodies were also recovered.”We got information about Maoists’ presence in Barwadih jungle late Thursday. Police forces surrounded the jungle and asked the guerrillas to surrender,” Superintendent of Police Kuldip Dwivedi told IANS.
“The rebels started firing at the police and the gunfight lasted till early morning Friday,” he added.
“We have recovered nine bodies of Maoists along with a huge quantity of arms and ammunition,” Dwivedi said, adding that the search operation is still on in the area.
Maoists sub-zonal commander Basant Yadav was also a casualty in the attack.
Police recovered one SLR rifle, five pistols, one AK-47, hundreds of live cartridges and incriminating documents from those killed.
Police believe that more Maoists could have been killed.
