Bhopal, June 27 (IANS) Mohan Singh Gujjar, a dreaded bandit who carried a reward of Rs.10,000 on his head, was shot dead in a gun battle with security forces in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, police said Friday. Policemen encircled Shala village in Morena district, about 400 km from here, following a tip off that Mohan Singh and his accomplices were hiding there after kidnapping a villager Thursday night.

“Mohan Singh opened fire when he was asked to surrender and the police retaliated in defence. He was killed in the gun battle,” Morena police superintendent Santosh Kumar told IANS over phone.

“While about five bandits managed to flee, Mohan Singh’s body was found near the Chambal forest. A .315 bore rifle and several live cartridges were also recovered from the site of the gun battle,” Kumar said.

Mohan Singh was earlier a member of the dreaded Jagan Gujjar gang operating in the districts close to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan borders but formed his own gang about three months ago.

Mohan Singh was wanted by both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh police in several cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion.
