Police find Rs.20 lakh on dead trader

Chandigarh, Dec 27 (IANS) Police and doctors at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH) Tuesday found almost Rs.20 lakh on a man who was found unconscious near the inter-state bus terminal here and brought to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A police spokesman said police got a call Tuesday that a man was lying unconscious at the inter-state bus terminus in Sector 43 and was taken by the PCR personnel to the hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The doctors later told police that the man died of a heart attack.

On search of the body and the bags of the deceased, police found that the man, Mohan Lal, 53, was a trader from Amritsar. The search on him led to the recovery of over Rs 19.47 lakh which were tied to his chest and ankles.

“The currency was in the denomination of Rs.1,000, Rs.500 and Rs.100 notes. Some currency (Rs.5 lakh) was recovered from his bag,” a police officer said.

On contacting his family, the police came to know that the trader was coming from Delhi after collecting payment for his artificial jewellery business and was going back to Amritsar. He had stopped in Chandigarh to take the bus to Amritsar.

Police have announced a reward for three police constables who took the trader from the ISBT-43 to the hospital and helped in the recovery of the cash.
