Panaji, Aug 18 (IANS) While continuing interactions with the northeastern community settled in Goa, police Saturday filed a first information report (FIR) against unknown people for circulation of a violent MMS purportedly featuring a member of the community.

Police public relations officer John Aguair said that police also held a meeting with the mobile service providers in the state, asking them to conform to the restrictions imposed on mass messaging by the central government.

Late Saturday, police filed an FIR against unknown people for “spreading enmity between communities, for spreading a video clip in form of an MMS on phones and also on other media, which is depicting graphic violence directed at a particular community”.

Earlier in the day, police held interactions with members of the northeastern immigrants in Goa to assure them that they were safe.

“The meetings were held in all police subdivisions. We assured them that the law and order situation was under control and that there was nothing for them to worry about,” Aguair said.

Mobile service providers were told to co-operate with police in curtailing the spread of such messages in public interest of the public, Aguair said, even as the union home ministry banned bulk SMSes and multimedia messaging services for a fortnight.

Over the last two days, the Goa government and police have issued statements asking the northeastern community to stay put and assured them that they were safe.
