Police ask arms dealers to install CCTV cameras
October 16th, 2009 - 10:22 pm ICT by IANSPanchkula (Haryana), Oct 16 (IANS) All arms dealers in this Haryana district have been asked to install closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras and appoint a guard at night after an arms shop was robbed of weapons and ammunitions worth nearly Rs.1 million last week, police said.
District police chief Amitabh Dhillon has asked all police station heads to ensure the dealers follow the instructions.
On Tuesday, robbers broke at least five locks before decamping with weapons and a large number of cartridges which were kept in the strong room of an arms shop here.
The robbers did not touch the Rs.500,000 in cash kept in the shop’s safe box.
“We are taking this incident very seriously and police are working on various theories. We have got the model numbers imprinted on the weapons and we hope to nab the accused very soon,” said Dhillon here Friday.
In Panchkula, there are nearly half-a-dozen arms dealers.
“The robbers cannot sell the weapons to anyone because of their unique codes. Therefore, it is clear that they have stolen them for personal use. We cannot ignore the possibility that they might be planning some major heist in this region,” a senior police official told IANS, requesting anonymity.
In June, Haryana police had arrested highway robbers and seized nearly 85 weapons from their possession. These weapons were stolen from a gun house in Hoshiarpur town in Punjab, around 100 km from here, in April this year.
