Warsaw, Aug 20 (Xinhua) US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski Wednesday signed an agreement to deploy a global missile shield in this East European country. The Polish and US negotiators reached the deal last Thursday. Both sides negotiated the deal for the past 18 months.

According to the plan, the US would place 10 interceptor missiles in northern Poland by 2011-2013 to protect the US and Europe from possible future attacks from what it calls “rogue” states such as Iran.

The US would also help Poland build an air defence system. The measure is expected to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries.

Warsaw has been urging Washington to help build an air defence system, similar to US’s Patriot air defence, in exchange for a Polish green light for hosting the missile shield.

Russia says the anti-missile shield threatens its security and warned Poland of serious consequences.
