Ranchi, May 18 (IANS) In the second such incident within a fortnight in Jharkhand, three people were killed and four others took ill after inhaling poisonous gas inside a well, police said Wednesday.

According to police, two people went inside a well to clean it at Tato village of Giridih district, around 190 km from Ranchi, Tuesday evening — but they fell unconscious.

Five others went inside the well to rescue the duo — but they, too, fell unconscious.

The victims were finally rescued from the well and taken to a local hospital, where three were declared brought dead. Four others were taken to Hazaribagh district hospital from where one of the seriously ill was referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) for treatment Wednesday morning.

In an incident earlier this month, six people, including four of a family, died after inhaling poisonous gas in well in Ramgarh district.

Experts say Jharkhand is a treasure trove of mines and minerals and also houses coal-bed methane gas. Poisonous gases like methane get collected deep inside wells.
