PM visits Japanese embassy, offers Indian assistance

New Delhi, March 18 (IANS) The people of India shared the sorrow and grief of the people of Japan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday and offered Japan any assistance apart from the woollen blankets it has already offered.
“The people of India share the sorrow and grief of the people of Japan,” Manmohan Singh wrote in the condolence book for Japan’s earthquake victims when he visited the Japanese embassy here Thursday afternoon.
Japanese Ambassador to India Akitaka Saiki thanked the prime minister for his message of sympathy and expressed gratitude for the large consignment of blankets sent by India as relief supplies.
Manmohan Singh stressed that the blankets were just part of the relief material from India and added that India was ready to help with any other form of assistance that may be required by Japan, the Japanese embassy said.
Manmohan Singh also urged the Japanese envoy to convey his regards to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
Two Air India flights carried two consignments of 10,000 high quality blankets sent by the government of India for the earthquake victims of Japan earlier this week.
Japan was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami March 11. Three nuclear reactors have been damaged, escalating fears of a nuclear meltdown.
