Kolkata, Sep 28 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan Wednesday congratulated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her victory in the Bhawanipore assembly by-poll.
Manmohan Singh, who returned from his UN trip Tuesday night, congratulated Banerjee on her massive victory.
Mukherjee said the result showed that the people have expressed their faith in the work done by her in the last four months.
“I congratulate her. It is the vindication of the steps she has taken since she assumed office and it’s a great victory,” said Mukherjee while talking to reporters here.
Banerjee is all set to enter the legislative assembly for the first time as a member after registering a thumping victory in the Bhawanipore assembly constituency by-poll with a victory margin of more than 54,000 votes.
The 56-year-old leader won the seat with a 54,000-plus margin defeating her nearest rival, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)’s Nandini Mukherjee, a computer science professor.
Narayanan also congratulated Banerjee on her triumph and termed it a “fantastic news”.
“It’s a fantastic news, what else can I say,” he said.
