Plane veers off Madrid runway, seven killed (Lead)

Madrid, Aug 20 (Xinhua) At least seven people were killed Wednesday when an aircraft broke apart after it veered off the Madrid runway and burst into flames, media reports said. Witnesses said the Spanair aircraft, with 160 people on board, was attempting to take off at the time of the accident.

A huge cloud of smoke engulfed the area after the crash. Rescue workers were at the scene to put out the fire, a report said.

Many people were injured in the incident. The cause of the accident is being investigated, the report said.
