Phones, liquor seized from prisoners

Kolkata, Jan 28 (IANS) The superintendent of the Alipore Central Jail here was issued a showcause notice after the police seized mobile phones, SIM cards and liquor from some prisoners, an official said Wednesday. It was Superintendent Kumaresh Roy’s “duty to keep a strict watch on the inmates. He has been asked to explain how the inmates got access to things like liquor, mobiles, SIMs and scissors”, Additional Director General (Prisons) B.D. Sharma told reporters. “We will take proper action after getting Roy’s statement.”

At least six mobile phones, three SIM cards, mobile chargers, a DVD player, some bottles of whiskey, DVDs, a pair of scissors and tin sheets were seized Sunday from the jail’s ward seven, eight and nine.
