Peter Gojowczyk wins second ITF futures on the trotSeptember 13th, 2008 - 5:49 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS) It has been a perfect Indian summer for top seed Peter Gojowczyk. The German teenager clinched his second $15,000 ITF futures title on the trot, outlasting Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan 6-1, 7-6 (1) at the R.K. Khanna stadium here Saturday.Aqeel never looked like putting up a fight as a rash of errors sprayed from his racquet and Gojowczyk took the first set in a canter, breaking Aqeel in the first, fifth and seventh game.
The seventh-seeded Pakistani showed restraint in the second set and staved off a match point on his serve in the tenth game to take the match to a tie-break with neither dropping serve.
The German played his best in the tie-break and allowed Aqeel only a point to win the match in a little over an hour.
A satisfied Gojowczyk, who had also won the Chennai ITF on clay last week, said he was determined to do well on his maiden trip to India.
“I wanted to win at all costs, though I didn’t have to do much in the first set as he (Aqeel) was the one who was rushing with things. But in the second set the heat was telling on me. Also, I have been playing continuously from the past 12 days, so I guess it affected me.
“But it was satisfying to win two titles in row even though the competition here wasn’t that tough. Playing in Europe is much tougher,” said Gojowczyk who now moves to Thailand to play in a $10,000 futures.
