Cuttack, Sep 9 (IANS) A pet dog was shot dead while trying to save his master from a neighbour who was quarrelling over a piece of land in Orissa’s Cuttack district, the police said Tuesday. Last rites were performed for the dead dog and it was buried in the owner’s garden.Manoranjan Nayak, a resident of Madhuban village in Cuttack district, some 110 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, was arrested for killing the dog Sunday.

Monaranjan and the dog owner, Natabar Nayak, had a dispute over a piece of land in their village and they quarrelled Sunday.

Natabar allegedly abused Manoranjan. This angered Monaranjan who brandished his gun and threatened to kill Natabar.

Natabar’s pet dog ‘Tommy’ jumped and tried to bite Monaranjan when he was trying to shoot Natabar.

The bullet pierced Tommy’s head and it died.

Manoranjan was arrested and the gun was seized from him, police officer Bikram Jena told IANS.

The police have charged Manoranjan with possessing a gun without a licence, killing the dog and attacking Natabar, he said.

Manoranjan’s bail application in a court here was rejected and the court remanded him to judicial custody.

After the death of the dog, Natabar and other villagers mourned its death. The dog was buried in the garden of its master as per religious rites.

“The last rites of the dog were also performed in the village. A tomb will be constructed soon on the burial place to remember the supreme sacrifice of an animal who saved the life of its owner,” a villager said.
