PDP walks out of Kashmir assembly over grave issue
September 27th, 2011 - 3:42 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Sep 27 (IANS) The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Tuesday walked out of the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly after the speaker turned down its demand for a discussion on unmarked graves.
The PDP, led by its President Mehbooba Mufti in the 87-member state assembly, walked out immediately after its call for an adjournment motion was turned down by the speaker.
“We wanted the crucial issue of unmarked graves to be discussed. We had to walk out of the assembly after the speaker turned down our demand,” Mufti told reporters immediately after she came out of the assembly.
There were 2,156 unmarked graves in 38 places of the valley in which people, whose identity has not so far been established, had been buried, according to the Jammu and Kashmir rights panel.
The PDP wanted all other business of the day in the assembly, including the question hour, to be suspended for an exclusive discussion on the unmarked graves.
The assembly session started here Monday.
Independent legislator from north Kashmir’s Langate constituency Engineer Rashid’s resolution seeking clemency for parliament attack convict Afzal Guru will be tabled in the assembly Wednesday.
While the PDP has already announced it would support the resolution, the ruling National Conference is still undecided over the issue.
