- Karachi, Nov 21 (IANS) Pakistan’s Law Minister Farooq Naek says the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) constitution gives dictatorial powers to the chairman and needs some major amendments.Naek, who heads the PCB Constitution Committee, wants to make key amendments to reduce the chairman’s powers and make it more democratic. His comments came after a meeting of the Constitution Committee in Islamabad Thursday.
However, Naek’s suggestion didn’t go well with PCB chairman Ijaz But who said the board’s constitution should not be amended till next September. He said the current PCB set-up came into power just a few weeks ago and needs time to carry out the changes required in Pakistan cricket.
Most of Pakistan cricket’s stakeholders attended the meeting. They included Federal Sports Minister Pir Aftab Shah Jilani, PCB’s new director-general Javed Miandad, chief operating officer Saleem Altaf, Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik, vice-captain Misbah-ul-Haq and former captains Majid Khan and Saleem Malik.
Three other ex-captains, Zaheer Abbas, Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram, were also invited but they did not turn up. Naek said the committee has invited suggestions from legal experts for amendments to the constitution adding that a comprehensive report will soon be sent to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, the chief patron of the board.
